It's a Wonderful Life is the ultimate Christmas film. The plot revolves around a depressed man who tried to commit suicide but is revealed to be a guardian angel. He is shown what the town would be like if he had never been born and realises how lucky he is to be alive.

Auld Lang Syne is sung in the closing scene by the town in George's honour and has since been immortalised in many other Hollywood productions such as When Harry Met Sally, where it is sung on New Years' Eve as the main characters share a kiss realising they are in love.

All I Want for Christmas Is You

Originally recorded by Mariah Carey, this song was made popular by the 2003 romantic comedy Love Actually, which has become one of the most popular Christmas films.

The song is now synnonimous with the films, which features an ensemble cast of various different characters looking for love in the run-up to Christmas. One of the most tender is that of the schoolboy crush between Sam and Joanna, which leads the boy to learn the drums in order to impress her when she sings at the school assembly.

In the scene, we feel proud of Sam for achieving his goal and the song is true to the essence of the film by reminding the viewer that it is not shiny presents and yummy food hampers that are important at Christmas but rather love, family and friends. White Christmas

This song, now a big part of Christmas popular culture, was written for the 1942 film Holiday Inn, starring Bing Crosby and Fred Astaire.

The main character Jim is a performer who plans to open an entertainment venue which will only open at the holidays. When he meets the beautiful singer Lila on Christmas Day they immediately feel a connection and sing White Christmas together at the piano, just as Jim would have done if the venue had opened that night.

The song is about a traditional snowy Christmas, but understands the reality of work and day-to-day life which causes people to be unable to spend it with their families. People relate to this song because they wish for a postcard Christmas, even though sometimes it can be hard to organise.
